Home Health Aide (HHA)
Home health aides provide personal care for patients who need assistance for a variety of reasons including illness, advanced age, disability, or cognitive impairment. An HHA is not a nurse or other medical professional, but a trained caretaker. While sometimes the duties of personal care aides and licensed practical nurses (LPNs) may overlap, it is important not to confuse the two.
HHAs provide a simplified routine of care for patients who struggle doing tasks but have the need or desire to still live in their own home. Although a home health aide works independently, he or she is supervised by a medical professional, usually a registered nurse.
In Florida, to work for a Medicare or Medicaid home health agency, HHAs must possess a home health aide certification showing successful completion of at least 75 hours of healthcare training of which includes at least sixteen (16) hours of clinical training through a qualified home health aide program and successfully complete a competency evaluation approved by AHCA. An HHA will also need to pass a background check and have a clean driving record.
